Import a COMPASS EDM Project

Bring an existing EDM XML or ZIP project into DirectionalPlan, check its survey-tool mappings, and inspect the result.

Open Import / Export

Select an EDM file

  1. Open Import / Export in the top bar.
  2. Under Import, choose EDM Project.
  3. Select a compatible .xml or .zip file exported from an EDM workflow.
  4. DirectionalPlan opens an import preview before saving anything.

Review the preview

Inspect the listed companies, wells, wellbores, and designs. Choose the data you intend to import rather than importing everything automatically. Review any warnings, including survey-tool mappings and coordinate reference information.

When the preview displays an unavailable or unrecognized tool model, select an appropriate available model only if you can verify its equivalence. An arbitrary error model can produce misleading uncertainty and anti-collision results.

Confirm and inspect

  1. Confirm your well and design selections and choose Import Selected.
  2. Open the imported design from the Workspace tree.
  3. Check the surface coordinates, datum/zone, north reference, survey stations, and the plan/section/3D views.
  4. Inspect linked targets, polylines, geology, design phases, sidetrack tie-ins, and the survey program where present.
  5. Open Offsets and select the offset designs you actually want for anti-collision.

After-import checklist

Before relying on the imported plan: Verify the surface-hole position in both geographic and projected coordinates; confirm feet vs US survey feet vs meters; review survey tool-code mapping; and compare at least a few MD/Inc/Azi/TVD/N/E stations with the source file.

Imported files may contain incomplete coordinate metadata or different naming conventions. Do not assume that an import warning can be safely ignored.
