Build a Directional Well Plan

Create a trajectory by combining planning methods, then review the calculated stations and graph views.

Select a design and a target

Open a Plan design in the Workspace tree. If you need a target, choose Targets in Quick Access and create one at the required Northing, Easting, and TVD. Target dimensions and their reference system matter.

In a planning tab, choose a saved target or use the User Defined target fields to enter coordinates directly.

Pick the planning method

S-Well is useful for a build–hold–second-curve profile. Slant creates a hold–build–inclined tangent. Build/Turn changes inclination and azimuth together; Dogleg Toolface controls a constant-dogleg steering curve. Hold extends an existing tangent, while Curve solves a single constant-dogleg section.

For an S-Well, enter five of the seven planning parameters and the target; DirectionalPlan solves the remaining two. The required fields differ for other tabs.

Calculate and continue the trajectory

  1. Enter the active planning method's required parameters.
  2. Press Calculate.
  3. Inspect the generated rows in Planning Rows. The section end becomes the starting point for the next planner action.
  4. Choose another planning method or insert a Hold / Curve as needed.
  5. Use Stations for an interpolated trajectory view rather than the editable planning-section view.

Review before reporting

Open Plan View, Section View, and 3D View. Check target intercept, final inclination/azimuth, vertical section, dogleg severity, and the surface reference. Run anti-collision after assigning offset wells and a suitable survey program.

Engineering judgment: A mathematically solvable path is not automatically operationally acceptable. Review steering limits, casing points, geology, hardlines, and anti-collision before using it.
