Coordinates, CRS, and Grid Convergence
Keep geographic, projected-grid, and local coordinates consistent across wells and targets.
Three location concepts
Latitude/longitude identifies a geographic position. Grid Northing/Easting expresses that position within a selected projected coordinate reference system. Local North/East is an offset from a chosen origin, such as a well or pad reference.
Coordinate reference checklist
- Verify the geodetic datum and projection zone (for example, the correct State Plane zone).
- Check whether values are meters, international feet, or US survey feet.
- Verify the north reference used for azimuth display and the grid convergence setting.
- Confirm that target and polygon locations use compatible physical coordinate references.
What is grid convergence?
Grid north and true north usually differ by a local angle. DirectionalPlan can display grid- or true-referenced directions while preserving its internal planning convention. Changing display north reference does not mean the physical target moved.
Tip: When importing older EDM projects with missing CRS information, independently verify the source projection before trusting a displayed distance between wells.
