Create Your First Well

Choose Quick Create for a blank plan or Full Setup when you have coordinates, magnetics, and reference elevations ready.

Choose how to start

Open DirectionalPlan and select + Create New Well in the blue top bar. The new-well workflow can use Quick Create or Full Well Setup, depending on your saved preference.

Quick Create: Enter a well name. DirectionalPlan creates a Personal / General / Unassigned well with an OH wellbore, Plan 1, and an initial 0 MD / 0° inclination / 0° azimuth row. You can add the remaining setup details afterward.

Full Well Setup: Create the well in your intended company, project, and site or pad, then complete the location, survey/magnetics, and reference steps before planning.

Enter the well identity and surface position

  1. Choose or create the Company, Project, and Site / Pad.
  2. Enter the well name and select a wellbore/design name.
  3. In Well Location, choose Latitude / Longitude, Grid Coordinates, or Slot Selection.
  4. For grid entry, confirm the selected reference datum and zone before entering Northing and Easting.
  5. Check the calculated coordinates and map preview before saving the location.
Coordinate check: A projected Northing/Easting only has meaning when paired with the correct CRS/zone and units. Local N/E offsets are not the same as global grid coordinates.

Set survey and well references

In Survey & Magnetics, choose survey tool models by measured-depth interval and review the magnetic reference settings. In Well Reference, choose a surface reference or a defined tie-in and verify ground and RKB elevations (and the resulting air gap).

These choices affect how depth, survey accuracy, and anti-collision information are interpreted. It is worth checking them before producing an engineering report.

Begin planning

Select the new design in Workspace. Use S-Well, Slant, Build/Turn, or another planning tab to create your first section. The Planning Rows table and the graph views update from the resulting trajectory. Save the design when you are satisfied with the starting point.
